Excitement 2008
Written by Didi
Tuesday, 08 January 2008
January 2008 sees two exciting new emerging artists exhibiting for the first time in the Byrne Gaunt Gallery. Scarlett Raven who is still a student at Central St. Martins but is being seriously collected already and Harry Simmonds who is on his way to London for his first show there. See the feature below. We also continue to show Daniele Mascaretti who has delivered a new collection of paintings after he sold out in his first showing with us. Daniele continues his themes of brightly coloured owls, wolves howling at the moon and wall hangings of trees and animals as well as some smaller paintings all in his wonderful naive style and painted in oils. They never cease to bring a smile. We will be giving a private view in January for Scarlett and Harry as well as a selection from our in house artists Daniele Mascaretti, Tom Elliot, David Boyne, Anna Timlett, Tom Lywood, Piers Browne and Dirk Larsen. Tom Elliot has a strong following in his home town, Bath, and paints in oils with storytelling themes such as 'Beano', David Boyne from Scotland has some beautiful wood cuts printed on Japanese rice paper with black ink and colourful monoprints of men and women. Piers Browne is well known for his etchings, having illustrated Piers Plowman and has produced a book on the Trees of Great Britain. We are looking forward to showing some of Piers brightly coloured landscapes and seascapes in oil. Anna Timlett continues to produce paintings of teapots and teacups and fancy cakes. Dirk Larsen's paintings have caused strong reactions due to the strange images, beautifully painted. One could well imagine a group of friends talking well into the night so many are the possible translations of his complex work. Tom Elliot will be showing for the first time his very personal Harsel the Hare in bronze, part of a limited edition as well as his etchings of Harsel the Hare.

Harry Simmonds
From December 2007 we'll be featuring the work of Scarlett Raven and Harry Simmonds. These two bright young talents are exhibiting at our gallery during January and February. They have both been acknowledged as two notable artists who look set to have a very bright future. Already collected and highly desirable, don't miss out on this opportunity to see their work.

Harry Simmonds is currently exhibiting at the Red Propeller Gallery as well as ourselves and is going to London to show next year before returning to Bath. Scarlett Raven although till a 2nd Year Fine Art student at Central St. Martins has recently had a show at Petley Fine Art where she sold 30,000 worth of paintings. Among her collectors are Orlando Bloom and the manager of the rock group Queen. Her father Raphael Ravenscroft was the saxophonist for Pink Floyd.

There is a raw energy in Scarlett's paintings that is unmistakable and her handling of paint is brilliant as are the compositions which all seem so natural to Scarlett. Vibrant frothy blue seas with white rocks, highly colourful moving seascapes, tapestry like expressionist landscapes. Cool Zen Japanese-looking arctic seascapes. I asked Scarlett as one painter to another whether she had ever doubted her painting and her ability for one moment and she replied simply "No, I have been painting since the age of four". You and Mozart then, I said.
If meeting Scarlett is not impressive enough you only need to look at her work.

Harry Simmonds is of a different disposition. Considered, introspective, intense, and utterly beautiful are his black ink marks on a white background that form a face which becomes more apparent as the light fades and which in bright light takes on a much more abstract quality. Harry has written his own statement which explains his making of these works to which I can add little. He is also showing as well as his larger pieces some small paintings of heads again with his intricate black marks. Suffice it to say both these artists deserve to be looked at seriously and whether you would just enjoy something beautiful on the wall or if you are a serious art investor then come and have a look.
